The
Brolo
of Barco

The history is recent: our company was established only in 2016 with a new proposal in the world of wine, a project with deep roots nourished by the memories of our childhood and the experiences of our youth.

We have always experienced the patient work in the countryside among the luxuriant rows of vines, the joy of the September harvests and the demanding winter pruning.

The People

Il Brolo di Barco was born in the very place that has made the history of our family and takes up a legacy that had not been fully expressed before: all our energies were concentrated in the vineyard and no bottle, in the past, had ever left our cellars except to be appreciated by the family.

Today we try, with boldness and enthusiasm, to enhance and share the extraordinary potential of our ancient vineyards through the wines we produce.

Maria and Riccardo

Barco is the village where we are located in the province of Verona. Brolo, instead, is a rare term used in ancient times in a few areas of northern Italy to indicate land enclosed by walls, usually cultivated with fruit trees, to crown a rural settlement. Over the years, the word “brolo” came to describe our vineyards precisely because they were enclosed by the dry stone walls typical of our hilly areas.

The Site

Barco, a village in the municipality of Lavagno, just a few kilometres from Verona, lies on the edge of eastern Valpolicella. The vine has always been an integral part of our countryside and has become, over time, the very emblem of nature – it is the crop dominating the landscape around us and its changing seasonal colours allow us to enjoy exciting views.

A 5-hectare vineyard, cultivated using the Trentino-Verona pergola system to allow the cool winds that descend from Monte Carega into the valley to ventilate the vines and the sun to ripen the grapes and give them fragrance.

Grassing between the rows, organic fertilisation and green manure guarantee the fertility and vitality of the soil, protect biodiversity and encourage the presence of beneficial insects. Using state-of-the-art techniques, we assess the actual nutritional status of the vines and monitor their phytosanitary state to ensure quality and sustainability of production.
